Weekly Prospect Hit Sheet: Monday, April 1 (Week 4)

By Sal Corso: April 1, 2024

The (AAA) Season is officially underway! The remaining levels look to start over the course of the next week or two. So let’s start with an EARLY look at some hot hitters that could break the majors fairly soon.

Bring ‘Em Up Already!

These kids are letting their respective teams’ know that enough is enough. Each have gotten off to a great start, and should see the majors in the near term.

Owen Caissie had a hell of a spring, and he isn’t stopping now. In 14 plate appearances this week for the Iowa Cubs, he’s slashing .583/.643/.750 with 2 2B and an RBI. There’s no room in the outfield in Chicago right now, but Caissie could easily find his bat in that lineup giving some of those guys a much-needed day off. Caissie should be able to leap in Tauchman’s role, if the latter goes cold at some point this season.

Mark Vientos wasn’t too thrilled when he found out about the J.D. Martinez signing by the Mets. In fact, the reporter somewhat put him on the spot. Anyways, that move essentially guaranteed Vientos that he would start in the minors, but he’s off to the right start. .333/.500/.714 across 12 plate appearances, with only one K. With the Mets rebuild in place, no reason why Mark shouldn’t slot in with Alvarez and Baty and get some significant playing time in 2024.

Junior Caminero picked up right where he left off in 2023. While (player not to be named) is out of the picture, Caminero is without a doubt the most intriguing young player in the Rays system. He should be up in no time. However, after a quick 4-for-9 start with HR and 2 RBI, he exited Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. We should know more right around when this article comes out, so hoping for a quick recovery before he sees the Rays dugout again.

James Wood almost hit his way into the pros this spring. There was probably a .1% chance that he would’ve made it opening day, but he did everything he could. In a quick 15 plate appearances in AAA, he’s looking to prove the same point. .400/.600/500 with a 5:3 BB:K ratio. Wood and Crews should join Lipscomb up in the pros in no time as the Nationals look to prove that the rebuild is over.

Powerful, High-K Rate Outfielder’s

Rece Hinds is a sleeper in my eyes. Reds fans and 2019 Bowman Draft fans have a soft spot for him. Hinds was top-10 in HR last season in AA. His problem? You guessed it, he paired his 23 HR with 161 K’s, also top-10 in the league. In 12 plate appearances this year, he’s seeing the same splits. 9 hard hit balls, 2 home runs, 7 strike-outs. Hinds just won’t be successful in the pros if he can’t improve on his swing-and-miss rate. It’ll be tough, but we’re rooting for him!

There’s not a single prospect that could win an OF spot for the Yankees right now, including Spencer Jones. But Everson Pereira got the chance last season. He didn’t take advantage, and found himself back in AAA to start the season. He’s having a solid start to the season so far (.308/.357/.538) but that K-rate isn’t improving. Without a significant improvement there, he won’t stand a chance breaking into this hot Yankees depth chart.
