Prospect Hit Sheet: Spring Training #2

“Who is still in major league camp? Who can break camp with their pro club. Who should you stash on your fantasy teams. Hit Sheet #2 is here

By Sal Corso: March 17th, 2025

A lot of change since our 1st Hit Sheet two weeks ago! Some prospects impressing, others not so much. Some healthy, also some not so much (*cries for Chase Delauter*). To make things easier, we’ll break this hit sheet out into two different sections and give each player a status.

But first, let’s start with a quick heat map:

Player [Upside Score] (Likeliness): SEE ALL OF OUR RANKINGS HERE

Prospects Impressing

Cam Smith, Astros [79] (MED)

Status: Can Make Opening Day Roster

The hottest prospect in Spring Training right here. Smith is showing the Cubs why you don’t trade a 1st-round pick for a rental in Kyle Tucker. A move which was weird from the start, given the Cubs are mid-rebuild. The 1.362 OPS says it all. He’s walking almost as much as hit strikes-out and is looking like a true MLB ready hitter. The corner infield positions were locked up this offseason by the ‘stros (Walker and Paredes). But it’s going to be hard to keep Smith out of that lineup. Unless Yordan can give them some time in the Outfield, the DH spot being taken makes things even more complicated for Smith.

Alejandro Osuna, Ranger [76] (MED)

Status: Will Not Make Opening Day Roster

A perfect example of a prospect showing you that his 2024 wasn’t a fluke. I keep saying that Osuna had the same type of breakout year that Kristian Campbell had without all the hype. And now, Osuna is taking advantage of his spring time, where Campbell has not. There’s absolutely zero room in the Rangers outfield (Carter, Langford, Garcia). Garcia is dealing with some mild oblique issues, but nothing that would seem to cause him to miss real time. Without an opening at the big league level, look for Osuna to get every day reps in AAA until the Rangers need him.

Matt Shaw, Cubs [77] (HIGH)

Status: Made Opening Day Roster

Shaw put up a solid 20 ABs in spring ball (.313 AVG 4 RBI). Nothing to call home about in the power department, but Shaw didn’t really need to do that much to secure the 3B slot for opening day. He’s now made the trip to Tokyo, which most likely means he’ll stick with the pro squad through their domestic opening day in 10 days as well. A consistent, mature hitter who should push for a .270+ type season with 15-20 HR upside.

Marcelo Mayer, Red Sox [73] (HIGH)

Status: Will Not Make Opening Day Roster

Campbell? Anthony? Nope. Mayer is showing why he may not be the least of the greatest trio in the MiLB. He’s proving a denier wrong in myself already. The .989 OPS is surprising only because of the power increase that it represents (OPS is OBP + SLG). The .560 SLG comes with a HR, 7 RBI, and a lot of fly balls (44% rate is highest of his career). He’ll spend the start of the season in AAA until the inevitable Trevor Story injury. Sox fans can relax. The future is bright, and the Bregman-Mayer-Campbell-Casas infield isn’t far away, especially since Devers finally came out and did the right thing by saying he’ll DH.

Prospects Disappointing

Chase Delauter, Guardians [83] (LOW)

Status: Injured, timeline pushed back

Giancarlo Stanton. Royce Lewis. Chase DeLauter. There’s just a group of guys ranging in age that just never stay healthy. A spring where he was a favorite to break camp with the pro team has now been put on hold for nearly two months. He’ll make the Guardians roster at some point early in 2025, but who knows when injuries can come into play and deter him.

Kristian Campbell, Red Sox [78] (HIGH)

Status: Can Make Opening Day Roster

The MiLB Player of the Year in 2024 was as much of a lock to make the opening day roster as any prospect in baseball. The combination of Devers’ (initial) ego and Campbell’s play this spring have made that difficult. Still, with a .152 average he’s looking like he can make the team. Campbell is even slotted into the Sox’ split squad game with the starters. He’s in the 7th hole at 2B. If Campbell can even remotely show what he did in the spring breakout game (below) over the next 10 days, he’ll be there opening day.

Coby Mayo, Orioles [75] (LOW)

Status: Likely Won’t Make Opening Day Roster

Mayo could’ve made a strong case to crack this opening day roster for the Orioles. Yes, Westburg and Holliday are slotted in at 2B/3B, but Mayo could easily find time this season. The O’s could rotate Mayo/Westburg at 3B, Holliday/Westburg at 2B, and Mayo/Mountcastle at 1B; but Coby’s .471 OPS and 31% K-rate in 40 spring plate appearances has given the O’s enough to send him down to AAA for a month or two. He’ll now need to impress in that time to make his way back up to the pros. The problem? A prospect by the name of Sam Basallo, who’s sped up his timeline, is now competition at 1B at the pro-level.

Christian Moore, Angels [75] (MED)

Status: Won’t Make Opening Day Roster

While many were calling for his promotion after a hot start to the spring, here at 2TB we have known about his streaky-ness and why he needs more time. As he’s cooled-off to a .237 AVG and 32% K-rate, it’s now inevitable that Moore will spend at least the first two months in the minors. If he can mature his approach and get some consistency at the plate, he can still be one of the earliest debuts in the 2024 draft (outside of Cam Smith).
